Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a high-level public debate on “Improving maritime security for international cooperation” via video conferencing. He explained the five principles for a maritime security strategy and the Indian policy on this issue known as ‘Sagar’.
The meeting was attended by a number of heads of state and governments from member states of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and high-level briefers from the United Nations system and major regional organizations.
“Modi will be the first Indian Prime Minister to chair the UN Security Council open debate,” the PM’s office said. The public debate will focus on ways to effectively combat maritime crime and insecurity and strengthen coordination within the maritime domain. The PMO said the UM Security Council discussed various issues of maritime security and maritime crime and adopted resolutions.
However, this is the first time such a high-level public debate has been held on maritime security as a separate agenda item.
