The Discovery of Tutankhamun’s Tomb Sealed : A Remarkable Archaeological Milestone

On November 4, 1922, the seal of Tutankhamun’s tomb was photographed just before it was opened. This ancient seal, which had remained undisturbed for 3,245 years, consisted of a clay stamp featuring the jackal god Anubis and an arm-shaped knot tied around one of the tomb’s handles.

In a telegram sent on November 6, 1922, Carter expressed his excitement to Lord Carnarvon: “At last, I have made a marvelous discovery in the valley, a magnificent tomb with intact seals.” His words conveyed the thrill of finding a sealed door, adorned with the known seal of the royal necropolis, the jackal and nine captives—marking the entrance to the final resting place of King Tutankhamun.
