Jennifer Grout: Moroccans Generosity Was Behind My Conversion Into Islam

Rabat – In an interview with Al Jazeera, American singer Jennifer Grout recalled fond memories of her time in Morocco that forced her to convert to Islam in 2013.

After graduating from McGill University in Canada and going to Morocco in the summer of 2012, Grout said there was something different about Morocco that influenced him to convert to Islam.

The 29-year-old singer spoke about the generosity and hospitality of the Moroccan people. He said listening to all the mosques at the same time calling for prayers surprised him. Grout added that all of this had led him to conduct extensive research on Islam.

He told Al Jazeera that he first listened to the Koran in 2010. He has also appeared in videos reading the Quran incorrectly.

The singer is also married to a Moroccan man with his daughter.

Recalling her pregnancy and the reason for choosing her daughter’s Arabic name, Grout said choosing her daughter’s name, Qamar (Arabic name for the month), was because she had a different contact with the moon during her pregnancy.

After appearing in the Lebanese talent show Arabs Got Talent where he surprised viewers and judges by reaching the final round, Grout disappeared from the music scene for three years.

He told Al Jazeera that after giving birth to his daughter he had to go back to everything and take a spiritual journey to find peace of mind.

The artist is a fan of diversity and Moroccan music. He has sung many famous songs of Andalusian, Amazigh, and Arabic.
